Jan. 22, 2014
Agent Carlos Rivera Vega, who was shot by a suspect on Jan. 14, succumbed to his injuries Tuesday.

A member of the Puerto Rico Police Department's Mayagüez Drugs Division died Tuesday -- seven days after being attacked during an investigation.

Agent Carlos Rivera Vega and other members of the drugs division were at the Concordia Public Housing complex on Jan. 14 when a man walked up to them and began questioning them on why they were there, according to El Nuevo Dia.

The man then pulled out a .357 caliber pistol and shot Vega in the abdomen.

Officials said the suspect ran a short distance from the scene before he took his own life.

The 14-year veteran of the police department was transported to a local hospital where he remained until he succumbed to his injuries.

Vega is survived by his wife and two children.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
