Shelby County Deputy Torrance Suggs was killed after he accidentally drove into a construction trailer.

A Shelby County, Tenn. Sheriff's deputy was killed in a crash while driving to work Monday night.

Deputy Torrance Suggs, 39, accidentally drove into a construction trailer on Highway 385 near Macon Road where new highway construction was underway, according to The Commercial Appeal.

Suggs' co-workers became worried when he didn't make the second roll call around 10 p.m. and took to the streets in search of him.

"I knew that something was wrong. That’s unlike him. He has always been hardworking and dedicated," Sgt. Robert Lofton said. "He is an extremely positive, upbeat person. He always had a kind word. I don’t know anyone who disliked him."

After locating his vehicle, they smashed in the windows and found him dead inside.

The six-year veteran of the Shelby County Sheriff's Office is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
