A Detroit police officer died while participating in a police motorcycle training seminar on Sept. 14 in Flint, Mich.
Officer Rodney Wayne Jones was taking part in the event around 4 p.m. in the 400 block of South Saginaw Street at the Bikes on the Bricks event when he suddenly stopped his department motorcycle and collapsed to the ground, according the The Flint Journal.
Paramedics rushed to scene and began treatment on the 29-year department veteran before he was transported to Hurley Medical Center where officials said he died from an apparent medical condition.
Family members and fellow officers attended a ceremony for Jones during the event on Sunday.
"He loved just trying to make a difference in the community, in law enforcement," the officer's wife, Mone Jones, said. "He believed in doing the right thing."
Police Officer George Chester said the man known as "Hot Rod" trained him on how to use his department motorcycle more than a decade ago.
"Rodney was a big brother to everybody he met," he said. "He was a jokester. If Rodney liked you, he talked about you. Rodney was just a great guy, he was always there for you 24/7. He always had his phone on."
Jones is survived by his wife and their children.
Funeral services are pending.
