A Vernon Parish Sheriff's deputy was killed in a single-vehicle wreck Monday morning.
Deputy Steven G. Netherland was on duty driving his 2004 Ford Crown Victoria patrol vehicle when the crash occurred on Louisiana Highway 8 around 7 a.m., according to a news release from Louisiana State Police.
Netherland was driving through a construction zone when he lost control of the vehicle, crossed the centerline and veered off the left side of the road before hitting two dirt compactors and a large roadway stabilizer.
Officials said the 54-year-old deputy was not wearing his seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash remains under investigation.
Netherland was a one-year veteran of the department. Previously, he worked for 22 years with Louisiana State Police before retiring.
"Netherland was highly respected among his fellow law enforcement colleagues, was a model Trooper and Deputy, always working hard towards our mission of public safety, and was always willing to help a person in need," State Police Spokesman Trooper Daniel "Scott" Moreau said in a statement. "Steven's dedication, work ethic, and eagerness to help will be greatly missed."
