A Faulkner County sheriff's deputy died after participating in a training session in North Little Rock Monday morning.
Deputy Hans Fifer, 32, completed a SWAT training program -- consisting of running, jumping, pushups and other physical activities -- when he began experiencing shortness of breath, according to The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.
EMS personnel on the scene gave the deputy oxygen treatment and shortly after that, he began complaining of chest pains before he collapsed, Sheriff Andy Shock told the newspaper.
The EMS crew performed CPR on Fifer until an ambulance arrived and transported him to Springhill Baptist Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
"We think there may have been some underlying health issues that we weren't aware of and maybe Hans wasn't even aware of," Shock told the newspaper.
Fifer had just joined the sheriff's department in January.
He began his career in law enforcement as a volunteer reserve deputy in Faulkner County a few years ago and had served with the Cabot Police Department following his stint as a volunteer reserve.
Fifter is survived by his wife and two young daughters.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
