Lumberton, N.C. police officer Jeremiah Goodson was shot and killed Tuesday morning while trying to apprehend a suspect, reports NBC17.

Goodson was reportedly off duty at a gas station when he recognized a homicide suspect around 11 a.m. and called it in. When a second officer arrived, the two began to approach the suspect in his car, and the suspect then began shooting from inside the car, hitting Goodson in the chest.

Lumberton Police Chief Michael McNeil reported that a suspect is in custody, and the incident remains under investigation.

Goodson was six-year veteran of the Lumberton Police Department and is only the second officer in Lumberton history to be killed in the line of duty.

He is survived by his expectant wife and one child.
