N.C. Deputy Shot, Killed

Five people have been arrested following the fatally shooting of a Nash County deputy Thursday night, according to The Kinston Free Press.

Investigator Warren “Sneak” Lewis, who was assigned to the Eastern North Carolina Fugitive Task Force, was shot and killed around 7 p.m. at 602 West Lenoir Avenue while looking for suspects in a slaying that occurred last week.

The deputy was shot in the chest while attempting to serve warrants with other members of the task force.

"Officers were doing a checkup on 602 West Lenoir Ave., in Kinston during the search," Kinston Department of Public Safety spokesman Woody Spencer said at a press conference. "Shots were fired -- an officer was injured. We secured five suspects from that building. Three were wanted in the murder of Thomas Hinton from last week.”

Lewis, 38, was a nine-year veteran of the sheriff's office and had been with the task force for three years.

Following the shootings, a standoff began and four males and a female would later surrender to police.
