Florida Corrections Officer Dies From COVID-19

Palm Beach County Sheriff's Deputy Maurice Ford died from complications associated to COVID-19 on July 27.

PALM BEACH COUNTY, Florida -- A Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office corrections officer died from complications associated to COVID-19 on July 27.

Deputy Maurice Ford, who worked in the West Detention Center in Belle Glade and had been with the sheriff's office since 2006, had been in the hospital since June, according to The Palm Beach Post.

Ford is the second Palm Beach County Sheriff's deputy to die after contracting COVID-19 since Deputy Jose Diaz-Ayala died on April 4.

Across the county, 52 of the 239 deputies who have been tested for coronavirus came back with positive results and of those who tested positive, 33 worked in corrections.

As of Tuesday, 212 inmates have been tested for the virus since April and 58 have tested positive. So far, no inmate has died of the virus in either of the two county jail facilities run by the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
