During his State of the Union address Tuesday, President Joe Biden called for increased police funding and more efforts to combat gun crimes in the country.

“We should all agree: The answer is not to defund the police,” Biden said in his first official State of the Union. “The answer is to fund the police with the resources and training they need to protect our communities. I ask Democrats and Republicans alike: Pass my budget and keep our neighborhoods safe.

Biden also asked Congress to pass legislation that would crack down on gun violence and trafficking. Specifically, he urged lawmakers to pass an assault weapons ban, as well as measures that go after "ghost guns."

“Pass universal background checks. Why should anyone on a terrorist list be able to purchase a weapon?" Biden said. "Ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.”
