A man was fatally shot by police during a traffic stop Thursday night in Prince George’s County, where two officers were also injured, authorities said.
According to a social media post by the department, an officer pulled over a vehicle around 8:40 p.m. in Chillum, near 23rd Avenue and East-West Highway.
Police said when a backup officer arrived, they asked the driver to step out of the vehicle. While one spoke to the driver, the other officer began searching the vehicle.
As the officer was still partially in the vehicle, the driver jumped back inside and began to drive away, police said. The officer stuck inside fired his weapon, striking the driver.
Authorities said the vehicle crashed into a pole approximately 100 yards from the initial stop, close to Ager Road.
Paramedics arrived and attempted emergency medical care, but the driver was soon pronounced dead.
Prince George’s Police wrote on social media that the Maryland Office of the Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division, which probes fatal and near-fatal police encounters, had assumed responsibility for the investigation.
As of Friday morning, the police shooting was not included in the IID’s list of investigations, which is eventually updated with the names of both the deceased and the officer.
A spokesperson for the attorney general’s office was not immediately able to comment.
