A Vermont deputy was injured when he was struck by a driver, dragged and pinned beneath a vehicle during a Wednesday traffic stop.

A Grand Isle County sheriff's deputy had stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation shortly after 8 p.m., according to a Vermont State Police news release. As the deputy was walking back to his unit, he was struck by a 36-year-old driver, later identified as Kevin Marx.

After he was struck, the deputy was dragged a distance, stopping in an off-road, wooded area. He remained pinned under Marx's SUV once it stopped.

It took about a half hour for crews to extricate the deputy. He was rushed to a Burlington hospital in stable condition.

No details were released concerning the nature of the deputy's injuries, but they weren't considered to be life-threatening, according to police. The deputy's name also was withheld.

Marx was taken into custody. He was charged with attempted murder and is being held without bail.
