A New York State Police trooper was struck by a vehicle while standing outside her marked patrol unit during a crash investigation earlier this month, authorities said.

Police were investigating a property damage crash in Duane just after 8 a.m. Feb. 13, according to the agency. Two marked cruisers were positioned on the shoulder with emergency lights activated when the incident occurred.

Trooper Bailey Martin was outside her vehicle talking with a fellow trooper when a 2016 Dodge Durango approached the intersection. The 21-year-old driver, identified as Colin M. Wanat, told investigators he didn't see the posted stop sign because the sunlight was in his eyes.

Wanat tried to stop and turn but couldn't, striking Martin and then colliding with her unoccupied cruisers, police said. Three other were in the Durango at the time.

Martin was taken to the hospital for evaluation. She has since returned to full duty.

The SUV’s four occupants suffered injuries that weren't life-threatening injuries, and they declined treatment.
