Video: N.Y. Deputies Rescue Crying Child Abandoned by Wanted Driver Running from Crash after Chase

COLONIE, NY — A police chase that began in Albany ended Tuesday when the pursued vehicle crashed on Route 9, with the driver running off and a small child climbing out of the wrecked car, authorities said.

The 36-year-old driver sprinted from the vehicle after it crashed near the intersection of Route 9 and Crumitie Road. As deputies ran after the man, a crying 6-year-old child got out of the vehicle and stood in the street. The crash and its immediate aftermath were witnessed and partly recorded by a Times Union reporter.

Though she did not appear to be injured, the child was taken to Albany Medical Center Hospital for an evaluation, Sheriff Craig Apple said.

The sheriff's office said the chase began at 12:17 p.m. on Interstate 90. Deputies tried to pull over the vehicle for traffic infractions, but the driver allegedly failed to comply and drove off. The brief pursuit followed.

The driver was charged with a variety of offenses, including first-degree reckless endangerment, unlawful imprisonment and child endangerment.

Sheriff Craig Apple says he has been involved in other chases and was wanted for failing to appear in a local court for a weapons possession charge. He was also wanted by police in Albany for a felony assault charge.

He is being held without bail at the Albany County jail.
