FORT COVINGTON, New York -- A New York State Trooper who shot out the tire of a car during a pursuit has been put on unpaid leave, according to state police.

Shawn Windoloski, a three-year veteran with the New York State Police, fired his gun toward a car its driver tried to drive away from police, police said.

On Saturday at 8 p.m., troopers tried to stop the car for speeding on State Route 37 in Fort Covington, according to state police. The driver did not stop the car, so troopers pursued it, police said.

When the driver eventually stopped the car on Frye Road, a passenger in the car ran from troopers, police said. Police later found that the passenger suffered a heart attack while running from the car on Frye Road, according to police.

The driver started driving the car away from police and Windoloski fired his gun toward the left rear tire of the car to try to stop it, according to police. Troopers then chased the car with its driver inside for another four miles, police said.

The names of the men have not yet been released.
