An Iowa police officer was stabbed in the face early Sunday by a driver, who was fatally shot after charging at the officer following a chase that ensued when the suspect refused to pull over.

The incident happened at around 1:25 a.m. when a Jefferson police officer tried to stop a vehicle, the Iowa Department of Public Safety stated in a news release. No details were released about why the stop was initiated.

A pursuit began when the driver wouldn't stop, and the Greene County Sheriff’s Office was called in to help. The chase eventually ended when the driver lost control of the vehicle and drove into a ditch. 

Following the crash, the driver, who was armed with a knife, got out of his vehicle and moved toward at the police officer. The officer opened fire, striking the suspect, who kept advancing and stabbed the officer in the face.

Lifesaving measures were performed on the suspect at the scene, but he was pronounced dead. The officer was rushed to the hospital, where he was treated and released.

The incident is under investigation.
