Mich. State Police: 'Super Drunk' Driver Rear-Ends Cruiser at Light
What to Know
- A 71-year-old man was jailed after allegedly driving drunk and rear-ending a Michigan State Police patrol SUV stopped at a red light in Bridgeport Township.
- Troopers arrested the driver on allegations of operating with a blood-alcohol level of 0.17 or higher and possessing open intoxicants, though no injuries were reported.
- The crash marks the second alleged drunken-driving incident this month involving a Michigan State Police vehicle, following a July 4 collision that injured a trooper in Genesee County.
Police said a preliminary investigation indicates that one trooper was sitting inside his vehicle and a second trooper was outside his vehicle placing flares. They were blocking the northbound lane of Dort Highway at Frances Road, with their emergency lights activated, due to a nearby barn fire.
Police said the suspect was traveling northbound at a high rate of speed on Dort Highway and struck the first trooper’s patrol car, forcing it into the second trooper’s patrol car.
The suspect then lost control and went into the ditch.
Police said the traffic investigation revealed the 29-year-old man had no license, no insurance and was intoxicated.
One trooper was treated and released from a local hospital with minor non-life-threatening injuries. No other injuries were reported, police said.
“Please drive sober. Every other driver on the roadway is depending on it,” MSP wrote on X after both crashes.
