A Maryland State Police trooper and a 16-year-old driver were both hospitalized Sunday night after a crash in Worcester County.

No charges were immediately filed and there was no update on either person’s condition as of Monday afternoon, according to state police.

“The trooper remains in the hospital. We are not identifying him at this time, but I can confirm he has been with the department for six years and is assigned to the Berlin Barrack,” a state police spokesperson said.

The crash happened shortly before 8:30 p.m. near eastbound U.S. Route 50 and Maryland Route 818, according to state police.

A preliminary investigation found that the 16-year-old was driving a Land Rover north on Maryland Route 818 and attempting to cross the intersection when he failed to yield to oncoming traffic, police said. The Land Rover struck a marked state police patrol vehicle traveling east on U.S. Route 50.

The trooper was taken by ambulance to a hospital and later flown by helicopter to a trauma center for treatment. The teenage driver was also flown to a trauma center.

Police did not immediately identify either person.

The Maryland State Police Crash Team is leading the investigation. Once it is complete, police said, the findings will be presented to the Worcester County State’s Attorney’s Office to determine whether charges should be filed.

Worcester County State’s Attorney Kristin Heiser said she couldn’t comment on a pending investigation.

“My office will review and make a charging decision once the investigation is completed,” Heiser said.
