A Delaware fire police officer was critically injured Monday when he was struck by a vehicle while directing traffic.

The incident happened just after 8:30 p.m. when a police officer with the Georgetown Fire Company was providing traffic control for a highway crash scene, the agency stated in a news release. While working at the scene, a vehicle struck the officer.

According to WMDT-TV, the 78-year-old fire police officer was standing near his vehicle, which had its emergency lights on. The officer also was wearing a high visibility reflective vest, as well as using a red strobe wand. 

Medical treatment was administered at the scene, and the officer was airlifted to a hospital. His injuries were considered critical, WMDT reports.

The Delaware State Police are investigating the incident.
