New Jersey Police Officer Killed in Crash

A Paterson, New Jersey police officer was killed in a car crash while on-duty Sunday morning.

Officer Tamby Yagan's cruiser slammed into a parked car. It was not clear whether the accident was the cause of his death, or if the 41-year-old officer suffered a medical emergency before the 10:50 a.m. crash, according to NorthJersey.com.

The cause of the crash is being investigated by the New Jersey State Police and the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office.

"He was a cop's cop," Patterson Police Director Jerry Speziale said. "He's somebody who went above and beyond. He was a true community person."

Before joining the Paterson police force in 2005, Yagan was a volunteer firefighter in Prospect Park for six years.

Prospect Park Mayor Mohamed Khairullah in a Facebook post called Yagan a "longtime personal friend and one of the kindest souls I have ever met."

A tweet from the New Jersey State Police Benevolent Association on Sunday reads: "We have lost one of our own in the line of duty today. #Paterson Officer Tamby Yagan was committed to protecting and serving. His tragic death leaves a loss for all of us."

Funeral arrangements are pending.
