A man who tried to run over Harvey police officers after he may have robbed a motel in the south suburb was shot to death by police, authorities said.
The man, believed to be in his 20s, was pronounced dead at Advocate South Suburban Hospital following the shooting a little after 10:20 a.m. today, said Harvey Police spokeswoman Sandra Alvarado, in an email.
Police were called about 10:20 a.m. to 16940 Halsted St. in Harvey because of a possible armed robbery in progress at the motel there, Alvarado said. A Motel 6 is listed at that address.
Officers arrived on the scene and got out their squad car to go into the building. As they started to go toward the entrance, they came across the suspect in a vehicle, and he tried to run them over, Alvarado said.
The officers, "in fear for their lives," fired their guns at the man, hitting him, Alvarado said.
Harvey police have asked the Illinois State Police Public Integrity Unit to help investigate the shooting, Alvarado said.
The man's name was not being released late Sunday afternoon.
