A police officer from the city of South Houston was injured Saturday when his motorcycle was struck by a motorist who apparently did not see him.
Richard Wilson was providing an escort for a motorcade and had his lights flashing and siren on when he rode ahead to stop traffic at the intersection of University and Greenbriar, near Rice University, according to a Houston Police Department spokesman. The driver of a Ford Explorer headed eastbound on University turned left onto Greenbriar, striking Wilson's motorcycle.
Wilson was knocked to the pavement and his mangled bike ended up on grass over the curb. He was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital with several broken ribs. South Houston police said he would remain hospitalized overnight for observation.
The driver was cited for failure to yield to an emergency vehicle. Police said there was no evidence the driver was intoxicated.
