The suspect's vehicle went airborne and collided with a Milwaukee County deputy's cruiser Tuesday.

Two Milwaukee County sheriff's deputies were injured Tuesday after a crash involving a drunken driver headed the wrong way on Mayfair Road.

One deputy was treated at a hospital for his injuries while the other was treated at the scene, said Fran McLaughlin, sheriff's office spokeswoman.

According to a news release from McLaughlin, a deputy saw the 40-year-old Milwaukee man driving a Ford Taurus headed south in the northbound lane of Mayfair Road just south of Bluemound Road shortly before 3 a.m.

When the deputy attempted to pull the man over, he cut across a construction zone to the eastbound ramp of I-94 at Highway 100 and began swerving through traffic at speeds reaching 109 mph.

The man then exited at S. 70th St., re-entered the freeway at 68th St. and again exited at S. Hawley Road to Vliet St.

Other squads joined the pursuit as the Taurus headed east on Vliet St. to southbound US-41, where it struck attenuator barrels and a median wall, went airborne and collided with a deputy's squad, striking the front window and injuring the deputy.

The Taurus came to a rest on the Stadium Interchange ramp, where the man was arrested.

The injured deputy was treated at Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa and a second deputy injured when her squad struck barrels that went airborne after being hit by the Taurus was treated at the scene.

The man was uncooperative, belligerent and verbally abusive, smelled strongly of an alcohol and later scratched an emergency room nurse on the hand during a blood draw, according to the release.

He was booked at the Milwaukee County jail on possible charges that include operating while intoxicated, third offense, causing great bodily harm, recklessly endangering safety, fleeing from officer and battery to an emergency medical care provider.

He faces potential penalties of up to 32 years and nine months in prison, according to the release.
