A Chicago police officer was seriously injured Tuesday night in a collision between his squad car and a garbage truck in the South Side's Back of the Yards neighborhood, authorities said.

The officer's squad car was "badly mangled" in the collision, which happened about 9:15 p.m. in the intersection of West 43rd Street and South Ashland Avenue, Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said.

The crash left the officer pinned inside the car, but he was alert and speaking after firefighters freed him, Langford said.

The officer was taken in serious condition to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County. His injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines said.
