A Metro Police motorcycle traffic officer was hospitalized after colliding with a vehicle Wednesday.

A Metro Police motorcycle traffic officer who collided with a vehicle Wednesday was transported to University Medical Center in serious condition.

The wreck happened about 1:40 p.m. at Durango Drive and Summerlin Parkway, Metro Officer Laura Meltzer said. Preliminary investigation indicates that the officer was turning left onto Durango Drive from the Summerlin Parkway off-ramp, when a car traveling north collided with him.

The collision knocked the officer off his motorcycle, causing injuries to his arms and shoulders, Meltzer said. The car spun out of control, stopping on the center median, Meltzer said. The officer was taken to the hospital in nonlife-threatening condition. The driver was not injured.

The Durango exit on Summerlin Parkway westbound is closed to traffic. Drivers in the area should detour to Buffalo Drive or Rampart Boulevard as alternates and should expect traffic delays. Meltzer did not know how long it would be before the road is reopened.

Information about the circumstances of the collision were not immediately available, but the driver of the car stopped to assist the officer, Meltzer said.
