Police say the driver struck the State Police cruiser as the troopers guarded the scene of a crash.

Two New Jersey state troopers were taken to the hospital after a drunken driver struck their squad car while they guarded an accident on I-676 in Camden Saturday morning.

Two troopers from Belmar Barracks were investigating a car accident on I-676 in Camden at around 3 a.m. Saturday and had stopped their car in the roadway, police said. While they were waiting at the scene, another car struck theirs from behind.

Both troopers were in the car at the time, and the car sustained extensive damage, police said.

The troopers complained of pain and were taken to Cooper University Hospital, where they were treated and released, police said.

Marlowe Valentine, 38, the driver of the car that struck the squad car, was arrested on DWI charges. Police also charged him with possession of marijuana.

Valentine is from Philadelphia but was driving a car with New Jersey plates, police said.
