St. Petersburg police are searching for a man they say drove his car at three police officers, sending one to the hospital.

The injured officer is in fair condition at a local hospital, police said. The other two officers weren't injured badly enough to require a trip to the hospital.

Police said the incident began at about 8:45 p.m. while police officers and fire department personnel were working a vehicle accident that had resulted in power lines being knocked down at Neptune Drive and Beach Drive on Coquina Key.

Police had blocked off the street when a man in a silver, four-door sedan pulled up and made an abrupt stop, investigators said. The officer at the intersection approached the car, smelled marijuana and ordered the driver to turn off the car, police said.

Two nearby officers had just helped the lone passenger out of the car when the driver restarted the car and accelerated, hitting all three officers with the still-open car door before driving away, police said.

The passenger has been detained while police continue to search for the driver.
