A Wilmington police officer was listed in serious but stable condition after he was shot in the face Sunday afternoon.
Patrolman Justin W. Wilkers, 34, was wounded following an attempted traffic stop and ensuing police pursuit in the 1200 block of Peach Street in the Southbridge neighborhood around 3:50 p.m., according to The News Journal.
Officials told the newspaper that the gunshot wound did not appear to be life-threatening.
Wilmington Police Capt. William R. Browne said that the bullet hit the officer's jaw and that fragments may have lodged in his neck.
"He's OK," he said. "He's got a lot of swelling."
The incident began after Wilkers and another officer attempted to pull over an SUV for a traffic violation.
The SUV then sped off and the officers gave chase before it stopped on Peach Street.
As the officers approached the vehicle, three occupants exited with at least one of them firing, hitting Wilkers.
The other officer was uninjured in the incident.
The males fled the scene and officials said that two were captured and were in police custody. The third suspect was captured Monday night.
No charges have been filed as of Sunday night and officials wouldn't say if one of the suspects was the gunman.
