Jan. 02--A pedestrian was killed by a police officer responding to a call and two people were hospitalized in a brawl Downtown early on New Year's Day.
Shortly after midnight Sunday, at least two officers responded to a report of a fight and shots fired in southwest Albuquerque when one officer struck the pedestrian in the intersection at Central and Coors, according to Albuquerque Police Department public information officer Nelson Sanchez.
"There was a pedestrian in dark clothing walking across Central from north to south, not in the crosswalk," Sanchez said in an emailed news release.
"The second police vehicle was unable to avoid colliding with the pedestrian," Sanchez said. "The pedestrian died on scene from injuries sustained in the crash."
The fatality was being investigated by State Police and the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office, he said.
Later, Albuquerque police responded to a report of a brawl Downtown, where one person was shot and another stabbed. Both were taken to an Albuquerque hospital. Sanchez's email did not provide the identities and conditions of the injured men, but according to KOAT-TV, they were Ricardo Cordova, 33 and Charles Britt, 32, both of whom were reported in stable condition.
Sanchez did not immediately respond to emails and phone messages asking for more information.
