LOUISVILLE, Ky. --

Two Louisville Metro Police officers are recovering after being involved in car crashes on the same day.

One crash happened Monday night. Officials said just before 10 p.m., an officer was on a ramp going from the Gene Snyder Freeway to Westport Road when a dark-colored SUV hit him from the side.

The officer was taken to Norton Brownsboro Hospital with minor injuries.

So far, no other details have been released.

Another officer was hit Monday morning on Interstate 64 in a blind curve near Interstate 65.

According to police, the officer was responding to a single-car accident when he was hit.

The officer suffered a broken leg and possible concussion when a car pinned him against a guardrail.

"Traffic accidents (are) the No. 1 fatality of police officers. It's very, very dangerous. It's a hazard we accept and we understand and try to take precautions to mitigate that, but (it's a) dangerous part of what we do," said LMPD Lt. Col. Kenton Buckner

Police are trying to identify the man who helped rescue the officer. He was driving a gray Chevrolet Avalanche.
