A Chemung County sheriff's deputy and another driver were killed in a head-on collision late Sunday morning, according to pressconnects.com.

Deputy Jeffrey Alexander, 26, was on routine patrol when the incident occurred shortly after 11 a.m. on state Route 427 in Ashland.

"It appears his patrol car veered out of its lane, striking the eastbound vehicle," Sheriff Christopher Moss announced at a news conference Sunday.

The other driver was a 77-year-old whose name was being withheld pending family notification. There were no passengers in either car.

State Trooper Greg Vaughn arrived at the scene first and found Alexander suffering from extensive injuries, according to the sheriff's office. Alexander was transported to Arnot Ogden Medical Center, where he later died.

Alexander had joined the sheriff's office in December 2006 and was the first Chemung County sheriff's deputy to be killed in the line of duty since 1939. He is survived by his parents and fiancée.
