The Automatic Police UAV Patrol System (APUPS) provides fully automated unmanned aerial vehicle police patrols and wildfire monitoring. It significantly boosts efficiency, deployment flexibility and surveillance quality for police and firefighters, minimizing human involvement and risks during regular patrols and rescue missions. APUPS also works well for patrols in remote or distributed communities with mountainous landscapes and poor road conditions.

APUPS can be applied to emergencies such as wildfires; the patrol system can identify a fire’s starting point, monitor its spread, and display smoothly synced audio and visual signals at the ground control center.

APUPS consists of a UAV ground control station, smart charging stations, and multi-rotor UAVs with remote multi-radio and 4G/LTE video streaming technology. For automation, the system features smart charging; UAVs running low on power will land and recharge at nearby charging bases and begin executing subsequent flight tasks after recharging. For deployment flexibility, the UAV ground control station software runs on Windows, and can operate on most desktops or laptops; also, users can send long-distance communications between the ground control station and the UAV fleet via local LTE telecom networks or the system’s built-in long-distance wireless star network. For service efficiency, the APUPS can simultaneously control multiple UAVs, each of which has been assigned independent flight tasks. This creates parallelization and provides a high degree of UAV autonomy for flight routes.

Moreover, the system supports shift-taking, in which another fully charged UAV will continue the flight route of a UAV that needs to return to its charging base. Shift-taking enables continuous patrol routes previously limited by power restrictions. For example, an aerial patrol of 54 kilometers can be completed in 15 minutes by 11 UAVs, each flying five kilometers.

The innovative patented APUPS technology is available for licensing to global companies who will bring it to market. Interested organizations should contact ITRI at (408) 428-9988 or [email protected].
