L.A. Sheriff's Headquarters to Move Back Downtown

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department headquarters will return to the historic Hall of Justice - where Charles Manson, Bugsy Siegel and Sirhan Sirhan once sat behind bars - in Downtown Los Angeles by 2014, officials said late Monday night.

MONTEREY PARK - The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department headquarters will return to the historic Hall of Justice - where Charles Manson, Bugsy Siegel and Sirhan Sirhan once sat behind bars - in Downtown Los Angeles by 2014, officials said late Monday night.

The current facility in Monterey Park will be converted to a detectives' headquarters, according to sheriff's Capt. Mike Parker.

The $231 million project was finalized and unanimously approved by the county's Board of Supervisors last month.

Most of the renovation costs will be offset by the consolidation of detective services into the Monterey Park property, which will allow the county to terminate other property lease obligations, Parker noted.

The county is also taking advantage of lowered construction costs resulting from the slow economy.
