NYPD Cops Who Wear Cams May Get Raises

City Hall has proposed a 1 percent salary increase for the 1,000 NYPD patrol officers slated to wear body cameras by the end of next year.

New York City officials are offering officers an added incentive for wearing body cameras.

City Hall has proposed a 1 percent salary increase for NYPD cops who don the devices, according to The New York Post.

As part of a 2013 federal court order, a total of 1,000 officers will be assigned to wear the cameras by the end of next year. The officers will be chosen by court-appointed monitor Peter Zimroth's team from 20 precincts with the highest crime rates.

The cameras will eventually be mandated for all of the NYPD's approximately 20,000 patrol officers.

Officials offered the bump in pay during a Dec. 16 mediation session to resolve a contract dispute with the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association.

A union official told the newspaper that members must first see the fine print before agreeing to the proposal.

"This is not a negotiation. It’s mediation," the official said. "The city’s proposal is vague. The devil, as they say, is in the details — of which there are none."

Some union members believe the offer is nothing more than a last ditch effort by Mayor Bill de Blasio to resolve contract issues and win over officers before his run for re-election.
