New Jersey State Police Transitions to State-of-the-Art Radio Network
WEST TRENTON, New Jersey -- The New Jersey State Police on Thursday announced a significant shift to the agency's public safety and emergency response communications system after the launch of a state-of-the-art Project 25 (P25) radio network.
The New Jersey Interoperability Communications System (NJICS) was built and maintained by Motorola Solutions, combining the New Jersey State Police's legacy communication system with the statewide network, allowing troopers to collaborate with other first responders through shared talk channels, according to a news release. The channels let over 20 state agencies to share critical information in real-time. This capability is expected to create faster response times and more efficient coordination during emergencies.
"Our troopers can now seamlessly communicate with other first responders on the statewide network, giving us access to more information than ever," Colonel Patrick J. Callahan, Superintendent of the New Jersey State Police, said in a statement. "The ability to share data and resources enhances our response to planned events and emergencies when time is of the essence and multi-agency coordination is needed. We are committed to protecting our troopers and the residents we serve, and this helps us deliver on that mission."
The P25 radio network was built to accommodate the latest generation of radio devices, which officials said will significantly reduce overall maintenance costs. Smart radios that merge P25 radio connectivity with cutting-edge LTE broadband capabilities enables troopers to access clear voice communications and maintain connectivity when entering buildings or going beyond the traditional radio network's coverage area.
Following the transition, the New Jersey State Police and partnering agencies have been able to employ P25 radio system during large-scale events including the Kanouse Wildfire and the 2023 KPMG Women's PGA Championship.
The New Jersey State Police also has access to an in-state operations center equipped with dedicated technical staff to enhance operations. This center monitors and supports the network around the clock, adding a level of availability that supports seamless communication during emergencies.
