Multiple Calif. Police Agencies Face 9-1-1 Dispatch Outages

Sept. 19, 2022
Dispatchers for the Chico Police Department and other northern California law enforcement agencies weren't able to receive 9-1-1 calls for hours before service was restored.

CHICO, CA—Early Monday, 9-1-1 dispatch center phone services were reported to be down by multiple agencies in the north state.

During the outage, other local agencies such as Enloe Medical Center, the Chico Unified School District and Butte College were affected. By 11:13 a.m. Monday, Enloe Medical Center, the school district, Butte College and multiple law enforcement agencies confirmed that their services were restored.

When announcing the shortage on social media, the Chico Police Department described that when a call would be made to dispatch by a landline or cellphone, the caller would be greeted by a busy signal, according to a social media post from the department.

"The city of Chico is currently experiencing a landline telephone connectivity disruption. Calls coming into the Chico Police Dispatch Center via 911 are not being received," said a Chico Police Department press release.

"We are actively working with service providers to have your 9-1-1 services fully functioning as soon as possible and will provide an update when information comes available," the Police Department said.

(Editor's note: the Chico Police Department's service was restored just after 1 p.m.)

In another social media post, the Butte County Sheriff's Office shared that its dispatch center had also been impacted.

During the emergency outage, people could still text 911. Agencies across the north state provided alternative phone numbers that could be used while the emergency dispatch center remained impacted.
