A Miami-Dade Sheriff’s deputy struck by a vehicle while helping at a Dec. 27 crash on the Florida Turnpike is recovering and now breathing on his own, officials said.

Authorities said the driver allegedly drove into an active crash scene without slowing, striking Cantave, who was airlifted to the hospital and underwent surgery.

The driver has bonded out of jail and is scheduled for arraignment Feb. 25, according to court records.
