A Detroit police detective has returned to work after receiving a kidney from his son.
Det. Steve Ford suffered from kidney disease years, WXYZ-TV reports. Last month, he went in for kidney transplant surgery.
"I feel good," Ford said as he went back to work Monday at police headquarters.
Ford received the kidney from his son, Austin. Even though Austin is his wife's child from a previous relationship, testing determined that he could donate one of his kidneys even though he and Ford don't share the same DNA.
"Just to be in a position to give a gift, to be a solution, to be a difference-maker … that's what he's always been to me," Austin told WXYZ last month.
Although Ford is back at work, he will be easing into his duties until he's cleared by the department.
