A Ross County sheriff's sergeant is in serious condition after exchanging gunfire in front of the sheriff's office with a man who asked for more deputies to come outside before he started shooting.
An Ohio deputy was shot and seriously wounded when he exchanged gunfire in front of the sheriff's office last week with a man who tried to lure more deputies outside.
The shooting happened at about 5 p.m. Thursday when Nicholas Mitchell, 42, came to an entrance of the Ross County Sheriff's Office and asked Sgt. Eric Kocheran for "more officers," the Chillicothe Gazette reports. The incident was captured on Kocheran's body camera, as well as an outdoor security camera, and the footage from both was released by the agency.
When Kocheran, who doesn't open the station door fully, asked why more officers were needed, Mitchell explains that his family is in danger. Mitchell then pulls his gun and begins shooting. Kocheran returns fire, and both men are struck in the exchange.
Kocheran was taken to the hospital, and he remains in serious condition. An emergency blood drive was held in his honor Monday by the Red Cross South Central Ohio Chapter.
Mitchell also was taken to the hospital, where died from his injuries.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is looking into the shooting.
