Oct. 21, 2022
Fort Lauderdale police are searching for a suspect who claimed to be calling from the department's parking lot, threatening that he had a grenade and "wanted to shoot a police officer."

A caller who claimed to have a grenade and threatened to shoot officers put a Florida police department's headquarters on high alert Thursday.

The call came in to the Fort Lauderdale Police Department just before 1:30 p.m., WPLG-TV reports. A man on the other end of the line claimed to be in the parking lot of the department's headquarters, and he was threatening to kill and injure officers.

“The male additionally stated that he had a grenade and that he wanted to shoot a police officer,” said Det. Ali Adamson.

Following the threatening call, the station was put on high alert and was closed to the public for nearly an hour, the department stated on social media. Officers conducted a search of the headquarters during that time.

"A thorough check has been completed and the threat has been determined to be unfounded at this time," the department stated.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident and are trying to locate the suspect who made the call. Anyone with information should call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.
