A woman was shot after she allegedly pointed a gun at a clerk at an Arizon police station Thursday.

The incident happened shortly before 10 a.m. at the Scottsdale Police Department McKellips substation, KPHO-TV reports. According to police, a woman entered the substation's lobby and drew a handgun.

The woman allegedly pointed the gun at an unarmed department employee. She then went to another service window and pointed her gun at a man in the lobby.

After that, officers entered the lobby and ordered the woman to surrender. She refused to drop the weapon and allegedly pointed it at officers, who opened fire and struck her.

The woman was rushed to the hospital, and her injuries were critical. She is in protective custody.

No officers, employees or bystanders were injured.

The shooting is under investigation by the Mesa Police Department. Investigators are trying to figure out why the incident happened.

“That’s something we’re still looking into is how did this happen. Why did she come here and a lot of those questions that we still have ourselves we’ll be looking to answer later,” Officer Aaron Bolin told KPHO. “For us, it’s extremely rare that we would have someone armed with a gun come into one of our lobbies and directly challenge any of our law enforcement officers.”
