SHREWSBURY, Mass. -- The driver whose SUV crashed into the front of Shrewsbury Police Department Headquarters Monday afternoon did so intentionally, according to Shrewsbury Police Chief Kevin Anderson.

The crash happened shortly after 2 p.m. when a black 2022 BMW SUV smashed into the lobby of the building, Shrewsbury police said previously. The driver was taken to a hospital with injuries while under arrest following the crash.

Anderson declined to name the driver during a Monday evening press conference but said he was a Shrewsbury man.

“We do not have a motive at this time,” Anderson said. “We have dealt with this person in the past. We have not dealt with this person since 2019.”

The Worcester County District Attorney’s Office is reviewing the crash and plans to file charges against the driver, the police chief said. He is expected to be arraigned Tuesday in Westborough District Court.

“This appears to be an isolated incident, and there’s no danger to the community at this time,” Anderson said.

No police officers, department staff or others were injured as a result of the incident, but Anderson described this outcome as “lucky.” The SUV traveled all the way into the dispatch office where three dispatchers were working.

The three dispatchers are badly shaken up as a result of the incident, Anderson said. The police chief described the incident as “very concerning.”

“The Shrewsbury Police Department remains fully operational, including business and 911 emergency phone lines,” the department wrote in a press release.

The front lobby of Shrewsbury police headquarters is closed, the department said. Those looking to file a police report are advised to call the department’s business line at 508-845-1212.

Authorities are still investigating the crash. No further information has been released.
