What to know

  • A man was shot and wounded by Roseville police early Monday after ramming a patrol SUV and approaching officers with a knife in the parking lot of the city’s police station, authorities said.

  • The suspect ignored commands to drop the weapon before two officers opened fire.

  • The officer in the struck cruiser suffered minor injuries, and the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation.

A man who rammed a Roseville police vehicle with his vehicle and then wielded a knife was shot by officers early this morning in the parking lot at the city police station, according to the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office.

The man was reported to be in stable condition Monday morning following the 4:39 a.m. incident adjacent to the police station in Gratiot Avenue near Common Road (12-1/2 mile road), sheriff’s officials says in a news release.

An officer who was in the SUV vehicle that was rammed sustained minor injuries.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, officers were preparing to leave the station to respond to a call when the suspect, who was driving a silver Pontiac G5, struck the parked police vehicle, which was occupied by an officer.

Brandishing a knife, the G5 driver exited his vehicle, authorities said. He was ordered to drop the knife as he approached two other officers who were at the scene. He did not and both officers shot the man, officials said. No other information was provided.

The male was taken into custody and transported to the hospital, where he was in stable condition at about 10 a.m. Monday. The officer inside the patrol vehicle received minor injuries. The two officers who fired were uninjured.

WDIV-TV (Channel 4) released the audio call of the police radio interaction among themselves and a dispatcher:

“This guy just rammed me, one from the station,” says the officer whose SUV was rammed. (‘One” is a reference to a single suspect identified.)

“From where?” a male officer responds.

“He’s at the station,” a female dispatcher says.

“Dispatch, he’s got a knife,” a male officer says.

“One with a knife,” the dispatcher says.

“Shots fired! Shots fired!” a male officer yells.

Roseville Police Chief Mitch Berlin said the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office will be handling the officer-involved shooting.

The shooting took place on the side of the police station, temporarily restricting access to the facility. Officers taped off the area but Roseville City Hall and the Public Library remained open.
