A woman is facing an attempted murder charge after she shot her father during a child custody exchange outside of the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office’s headquarters on Sunday, officials said.
The incident occurred about 9 a.m. at the sheriff’s administration building at 10750 Ulmerton Road.
Gabriella Nascimento, 28, was arrested after the shooting while her father, Rogerio Nascimento, was taken to a hospital in critical but stable condition, officials said.
The incident began when Rogerio Nascimento, 47, who is from Valrico, and his estranged wife arrived at the sheriff’s office for the custody exchange. Rogerio Nascimento was accompanied by his sister; his estranged wife had their four children, all minors, with her, along with a friend, officials said.
Three of the four children “were reportedly hesitant to exit the vehicle,” sheriff’s officials said in a news release. That’s when Gabriella Nascimento arrived separately and joined a “conversation” in the parking lot with the others, officials said.
Shortly after, Gabriella Nascimento shot her father in the back. The father ran toward the front lobby. His daughter chased him and fired at him again, but missed, officials said.
The father ran into the building asking for help. His daughter “fell on the sidewalk, placed the firearm on the ground, and stood on the sidewalk near the parking lot until deputies took her into custody,” officials said.
No one else was injured.
Court records list Gabriella Nascimento as a transient in the Largo area. She was being held at the Pinellas County jail on Monday, though bail information was not yet available.
