Project Description
When Henrico County’s southeastern police unit outgrew their leased office space, they needed more than additional square footage—policing required security systems, training facilities for officers and K9 units, and spaces engineered for both tactical operations and community engagement. Strategically positioned, the new station enhances operational readiness in the southeastern district of this large, central Virginia county.
Recognizing the demands of law enforcement careers, the focus of South Station's design is to be comfortable and supportive for the officers with a strong emphasis on efficiency, safety, and overall well-being. The design was enhanced for the officers' positive experience, starting the moment they access the secure entrance and are welcomed into a bright, spacious breakroom that feels like the heart of the station. From this common space, officers can easily connect to evidence processing, report writing, mailroom, exercise facilities, and briefing spaces, allowing officers to move fluently through their day.
Physically and visibly connected spaces, with the use of glazing, foster a general awareness of who is working in the facility, builds camaraderie and supports the unique communal needs of police officers. A dedicated wellness room, physical fitness space, break areas and modern locker rooms support officer physical and mental health. The layout connects four department suites located off the central spine of the building with key adjacencies to resources that optimize workflow. The DART (directed action response team) suite and interview resources are located on a secondary secure corridor adjacent to the garage. This layout offers additional privacy and security. Each office suite includes spaces for impromptu collaboration with whiteboards and technology.
Officer well-being is supported both inside and on the exterior of the station. Each building features a covered patio, and the site provides a secure walking path and police memorial plaza dedicated to fallen officers and K9s.
