Project Description

BKV Group has been commissioned by Montgomery County to provide programming, design, and construction administration services for the 6th District Police Station. Key programming challenges included updating the detention area to comply with current county and state standards, revising the locker layout to accommodate changing gender ratios, future flexibility, and privacy concerns, modifying the motorcycle vehicle bay to accommodate the entire county motorcade and meeting the sustainability targets set by the county’s carbon-neutral goals and the IGCC. The project is completed and represents the first NetZero police station in the state.

The project includes the construction of a new two-story police station 28,294 sq. ft.. The first-floor houses are public access areas, operations, patrol and support functions, locker areas, evidence collection and storage and a detention area. The second floor accommodates four special teams, investigative units, patrol sergeant offices, staff support, administration, and an exercise room. A new two-level 59,526 sq. ft. parking garage accommodating 148 vehicles, a large evidence storage room, flare storage, bicycle storage, and vehicle storage for the Central Traffic Unit’s 29 motorcycles.

The site, which is part of a proffered development condition, offers strong access to major roadways but is smaller and has more challenging topography than typically required for a district police station. The parking solution features a tiered approach to accommodate the extensive vehicle motorcade requirements within the constrained site. Secure parking supports 60 police cruisers, 29 motorcycles, with 80 staff parking spaces on the upper level. An additional 50 parking spaces are provided for the public.

Operationally, the station will function 24/7 and serve as the command center for satellite facilities within the police district. It will support up to 178 department staff and volunteers and feature a public meeting room on the first floor to facilitate community outreach.
