Project Description
The South Elgin Public Safety Center is thoughtfully designed to support community engagement and promote officer wellbeing. Designed as a community-integrated facility, this 36,482 square foot, two-story building is a model of modern law enforcement design. Located in the heart of downtown, the facility occupies a full city block adjacent to the Village Hall and just west of the Fox River. The site was carefully selected to enhance and respect the surrounding community. The building’s prairie-style architecture with lowsloped roofs, horizontal stone banding, and warm brick tones anchors it in the Midwestern landscape, while a prominent Veterans Plaza at the main entry honors military service.
The building’s main entry is framed by a Veteran’s Plaza, an eight-foot curved stone wall with bronze plaques honoring all five branches of the military. This plaza also serves as a buffer between public and secure zones.
The main lobby is a two-story, light-filled space with views of the Fox River, and features display cases for local history and achievements. Adjacent to the lobby is a large multipurpose room that functions as a Village Board Room, Emergency Operations Center, and more.
The facility is designed to support secure, efficient workflows while maintaining clear separation between public and secure zones. A secure sally port connects to the booking area, which includes detention cells, an interview room, and an attorney meeting space. These spaces were designed to meet Illinois Department of Corrections standards and ICC 500 storm shelter requirements.
The second floor prioritizes officer wellness. Amenities include a fitness room with river views, spacious locker rooms with private showers, a wellness room, a mother’s room with dimmable lighting and refrigeration, and a spacious break room.
Evidence processing is streamlined through specialized spaces including pass-through lockers, a robust HVAC system, and a large vehicle evidence garage.
