National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund Announces May 2025 Officer of the Month
WASHINGTON, D.C. (June 30, 2025) - The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) today announced that Police Officer First Class (POFC) Ian Lachapelle of the Fairfax County (VA) Police Department, is their Officer of the Month for May 2025. POFC Lachapelle was selected for his actions when he ultimately saved the lives of his two fellow officers who were taking fire at point-blank range from a driver of a vehicle they had stopped.
During a traffic stop, two officers encountered a 36-year-old driver after pulling them over for a speeding violation. While approaching the vehicle, the driver expressed agitation and refused to produce their identification. Shortly after POFC Lachapelle arrived as a backup officer, the motorist opened fire from his vehicle on the officers involved. Two officers were struck while POFC Lachapelle returned fire, fatally wounding the suspect. The officers then administered first aid at the scene until medical personnel arrived and transported the motorist to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. The two officers received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.
“The response demonstrated by Police Officer First Class Lachapelle reflects the commitment law enforcement officers across the country bring to their work each day,” said William Alexander, CEO of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. “His actions highlight the importance of training, preparedness, and the responsibility officers carry to protect others and we are proud to recognize his dedication and service as the May 2025 Officer of the Month”
The Officer of the Month Award Program is sponsored by the Police Unity Tour and recognizes federal, state, and local officers who distinguish themselves through exemplary law enforcement service and devotion to duty.

About the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund
Established in 1984, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to honoring the fallen, telling the story of American law enforcement, and making it safer for those who serve. The first pillar of this mission, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C., honors the names of all of the 24,412 officers who have died in the line of duty to date throughout U.S. history. Additionally, NLEOMF maintains and publishes comprehensive details on the circumstances surrounding official line-of-duty deaths. The Officer Safety and Wellness pillar uses that data, coupled with best-practice program models, to produce programming directed at solutions to improve survivability and enhance wellness. NLEOMF’s third pillar, the National Law Enforcement Museum (LawEnforcementMuseum.org) is committed to preserving the history of American law enforcement and sharing the experiences of service and sacrifice for generations to come.
