Ohio Sheriff's Department Adopts New Policy that Limits Chase for Felony Offenders

Under the new rules, Cuyahoga County sheriff's deputies will only be permitted to pursue suspects if they are believed to have committed one of nearly 40 violent felonies, such as murder, assault and rape.

  • The Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Department has renamed its Downtown Safety Patrol to the Community Support Unit and implemented a restrictive new vehicle pursuit policy following fatal crashes that killed three people.

  • Deputies can now only pursue suspects tied to 39 violent felonies and must end chases without supervisor approval, if the suspect is identifiable, or if visual contact is lost.
