Poll: Feds to Reimburse Police for Help with Immigration Enforcement
What to know
-
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced a new program offering "reimbursement opportunities" to police agencies that assist Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in locating, arresting and removing undocumented immigrants.
-
Agencies could receive up to $1,000 quarterly per trained officer based on successful help in ICE operations.
-
The initiative targets high-risk offenders and is part of the administration’s broader immigration enforcement strategy.
WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on Tuesday said it plans to offer extra money to encourage police officers to help "arrest and remove" undocumented immigrants.
The DHS said that it would offer "reimbursement opportunities for state and law enforcement... helping U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrest and remove the worst of the worst including murderers, gang members, rapists, terrorists, and pedophiles from American communities."
Participating police agencies could receive up to $1,000 per quarter per trained officer "based on the successful location of illegal aliens provided by ICE and overall assistance to further ICE's mission to Defend the Homeland."
The move is aimed at increasing deportations, as part of US President Donald Trump's hard-line immigration policies.
Funding for the initiative will come partly from budget cuts elsewhere. Trump's tax plan, for instance, includes reductions in healthcare benefits for low-income US citizens.
