Violent crime decreased nearly 5% nationally last year, with homicides and cases of non-negligent manslaughter seeing a double-digit drop, according to the FBI's recently released national reported crime statistics for 2024.

The FBI's data, which was released Tuesday, covers over 14 million criminal offenses reported to the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program by more than 16,000 participating law enforcement agencies.

Compared to 2023, national violent crime decreased roughly 4.5% in 2024, with a violent crime happening an average of every 25.9 seconds last year, according to the report. A murder occurred an average of every 31.1 minutes, and a rape happened every 4.1 minutes, the data shows.

  • Murder and non-negligent manslaughter decreased 14.9% nationally in 2024 compared to the previous year.
  • Rapes decreased 5.2%.
  • Aggravated assaults decreased 3.0%.
  • Robberies decreased 8.9%.
